Festoon lights are incredibly popular – you’ll see them in gardens, on patios, at weddings, and during events. They instantly add atmosphere and are relatively easy to install – provided you follow a few smart tips. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to hang festoon lights, what to watch out for, and how to achieve the best results.
Gather your materials before you start. Depending on your setup, you may not need them all, but it’s handy to have them ready.
- Measuring tape
- Pencil or marker
- Screw hooks or eye bolts
- Wall plugs (for masonry)
- Cable ties or light clips
- Rope or straps (for trees or temporary structures)
- Optional: Steel cable for long spans
- Screwdriver and drill
Decide where the lights will add the most atmosphere – above a seating area, along a pergola, or in a tree. Make sure there’s a nearby socket or plan a safe extension cable.
Do you want the cable tight, hanging in soft curves, or zigzagging between posts? Measure carefully and add extra length for bends or loops.
- Length: Available from 5 to 50 metres
- Connection: With plug or connectable system
- IP rating: Choose at least IP44 for outdoor use
- Lampholders: Choose spacing and bulb type (clear, warm white, coloured, dimmable)
- Wooden beams/posts: Use screw eyes or hooks
- Walls: Fit plugs with eye bolts
- Trees or temporary structures: Use rope or straps (non-damaging)
- Long spans: Support with steel cable
Start at the power source and work outwards. Use cable ties (temporary), cable clamps (permanent), or clips (neat finish). Ensure lamp holders hang down and avoid sharp bends or kinks.
Only screw in the bulbs once the cable is fully installed to avoid breakage. Screw them in firmly but not overtight.
Plug in the cable and check all bulbs. If dimmable, test different brightness levels. Consider a timer or smart plug for automatic on/off.
- Hanging height: Keep at least 2.2 m above walkways
- Light temperature: Warm white for a cosy, inviting feel
- Secure against wind: Add extra ties or secure along a beam
- Seasonal use: Weatherproof for rain, but store during prolonged frost for longer lifespan
