How to hang a pendant light

Hanging a pendant light is a simple DIY task when you’re well prepared. In this blog, we guide you step-by-step through the process to safely and neatly install your pendant light, giving your space the perfect finishing touch.

Tools you’ll need

Before you start, it’s smart to gather your tools. In many cases, you won’t need much, but having everything ready will make the job easier. Read the full guide first to see if your situation requires any extra equipment.

- Voltage tester

- Screwdriver
- Screws and wall plugs (often included with the light)

Step-by-step installation guide

1. Switch off the power

Turn off the power to the circuit where the light will be connected. Use a voltage tester to confirm there is no electricity running through the wires. If the tester’s light doesn’t turn on, it’s safe to proceed.

2. Attach the mounting bracket

Remove the mounting bracket from the pendant light and secure it to the ceiling or junction box using screws and plugs. In newer homes, the bracket often fits directly onto the junction box. In older houses, you may need to drill holes in the ceiling first.

3. Connect the wires

Strip about 0.5 cm of insulation from both the blue and brown wires using a wire stripper. Insert these wires into the terminal block – it doesn’t matter which side each wire goes into. If your pendant light has a ground wire (green-yellow), connect it to the middle opening of the terminal block. Tighten all screws securely.

4. Secure the fixture

Place the fixture against the mounting bracket and fasten it by tightening the small screws. This ensures the lamp is firmly attached to the ceiling.

5. Install the light bulb

Screw the appropriate light bulb into the fitting. The packaging will indicate the correct type. You can find the right bulbs in our Lampgigant assortment. Once installed, turn the power back on and check if the lamp works. Done!

What height should you hang a pendant light?

The ideal height depends on the location and purpose of the light. Here are some general guidelines:

- Above a dining table: Bottom of the light about 75–90 cm above the tabletop for sufficient light without blocking views.
- In a hallway or entrance: At least 2.10 m from the floor to prevent head bumps.
- In a living room or bedroom: Around 1.60–1.80 m above the floor (eye level) for general lighting.
- Above a kitchen island or worktop: Bottom of the light about 75–90 cm above the surface for optimal task lighting.

Tip: Temporarily hang the light at your preferred height and check how it looks before securing it permanently.
